Lauren Carter: The Plain English Nerd

Oh hey there! My name’s Lauren Carter, and I live in regional Victoria with my beautiful husband, son, and cattle dog.

I’m a total language and linguistics nerd who gets annoyed when I read something that’s overly convoluted and difficult to understand.

Coincidentally, I’ve got a knack for turning complex ideas into simple terms that anyone can understand.

Okay, by “knack” I mean I majored in linguistics at uni and love learning about languages, so I know the ins and outs of grammar and linguistic theory.

In my spare time, I enjoy listening to podcasts, playing board games, lifting weights at the gym, and spending time with my newborn son.

Who does Lauren Carter help?

I help small business owners in regional and rural Australia communicate more effectively with their clients and customers.

I absolutely LOVE working with small businesses in education, technology, and creative industries because I have a background in these areas.

But if you’re not in these areas (or you’re not a small business in regional or rural Australia), don’t let that stop you from reaching out — I don’t discriminate.

I know you (but not in a creepy stalker way!)

You’re struggling to authentically connect with your audience via email or social media.

You know you need a website and a blog, but you’re completely winging it and have no idea what words to write to attract your ideal customer.

Or perhaps you’ve got your game plan sorted, but you’d rather palm off the writing to a professional and affordable person so you can focus on what you do best.

Well…you’re in luck.

I’m the professional and affordable language nerd you need.

My philosophy

I believe in five core values:

1. Family come first.

2. Crunchy peanut butter comes second.

3. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

4. The Oxford comma exists for a reason. Use it.

5. People who use “whom” correctly are show-offs.

Fun facts about me

If you’ve gotten this far, congratulations! As a bonus, here are some interesting tidbits about me.

I speak Mandarin and studied at a Chinese university for two months as part of my bachelor degree in Chinese and Linguistics. I’ve travelled extensively around China and lived there for about six months across three different trips.

I can solve a Rubik’s cube in under two minutes. (#humblebrag)

I’m great at cooking coconut rice. Ask me for the recipe — it’s super simple.

When I was 12, I taught myself how to juggle from reading a library book. I wanted to join the circus at some point too, but then other interests took over. I’m surprised how well I can juggle after not actively practicing in years (and I can still do some of the tricks, too!).

I got really good at playing the board game Rummikub after downloading an app on my tablet and playing heaps while travelling on trains in China. When I started winning 90% of the in-person games I played, none of my friends wanted to play with me anymore (#sorelosers). I haven’t played in years, but if anyone wants to challenge me, I’d be up for it.

Think I’m cool quirky enough to work with?
